How To Retire With Style

At NORTH SURREY SECONDARY SCHOOL in British Columbia, Canada, there is a Performing Arts department and a wonderful dance teacher, Shirley Clements. Among her notable accomplishments, Ms. Clements created an annual dance competition among local secondary schools, OUTBREAK.

Since Ms. Clements turned 60 years old this year, she is retiring from teaching and Outbreak this year is her last as a teacher. So, retirement usually comes with a send-off, maybe some reminiscences about past years, how the years have gone by, and maybe a few retirement gifts.

However, Shirley Clements may be one of the only retirees who left work life this way! You see, besides being able to teach dance, she's no slouch in the dance department. In fact, she really knows her stuff, and she gave a remarkable performance with her students to mark her departure.

It started with a rap, then proceeded with style and panache, done to Bruno Mars' "Uptown Funk". There were high kicks, intricate dance moves, and a touch of break dancing. Ms. Clements kept up with her students and then some. And this was no short dance routine. Three minutes into the dance portion, she actually stands on her head and spins, along with some of her students. The crowd went wild at that point and that was the end of the routine.

This performance by Ms. Clements wasn't all that unusual; her students are aware of her performance brilliance. One of her former students, Nicole Jarvis, is now a teacher, too. She remembers taking a number of field trips with this remarkable teacher. And when she shared the video of Ms. Clements, she remarked, "Way to go, Ms. Clements! Thanks for being awesome."

She was obviously a beloved teacher and will be missed by her students. I wish Ms. Clements all the best and continued passion in whatever she chooses to do.
