A Traffic Ticket With A Surprise

Dana and Matthew Manley.
It's a trip that Matthew Manley makes every day from Hermann to St. Louis, MO, with his 5-year-old niece, Sydney. She has to be at the hospital that often for a daily dose of chemotherapy.

Well, amidst all of that travelling, Mr. Manley had thought he had the time to transfer the correct license plates onto his new vehicle, but it had just never happened. So, on the way back from the hospital, it wasn't really much of a surprise when a St. Charles County police officer stopped him and wrote out a ticket.

But the family members started getting nervous when they noticed the officer opening the trunk of his police cruiser. Mr. Manley said, "I wasn't sure what he was doing", so he sent a text message to his wife. His wife, Dana, reported, "He texted me scared to death."

However, not to worry. While he was writing out the ticket, Officer Shawn Birdsong had noticed the young passenger, Sydney, who had lost all of her hair from the chemotherapy treatment. And he had gone into his cruiser's trunk for one of the backpacks that he always carries.

PROJECT BACKPACK ST. LOUIS provides local police department and social service workers with the backpacks for any children whom these workers come across, who are in need. Such items as coloring books, crayons, clothes, and stuffed animals are included in the backpacks. Officer Birdsong also included a note that read, "From Officer Shawn; Hope you get to feeling better real soon!!" followed by a smiley face.

Not only did this touching gesture brighten the day for young Sydney, it also did the same for the adults in the family. Ms. Manley said, "Officer Shawn Birdsong was doing the job he was hired to do. Sydney has had a tough time with this cancer, and the chemo isn't fun, but for Officer Shawn to give her a backpack full of goodies, just because, made her realize that people that don't even know her care about her. He showed us, again, that a police officer is just a regular person with a job to do. He just put a little more effort into his job to make a little girl's day a little brighter."

The touching note from Officer Birdsong.
In fact, Officer Birdsong is so selfless in his act of kindness that all media efforts to photograph him were turned down. You, see he did what he did for the child, not for the publicity.
