These men become immersed in the work and power of the Holy Spirit, praising God's mercy, journeying throughout their lives in praise and worship, exploring the works of God. In fact, the abbey is a place where a visitor can feel the presence of God in the here and now.
Every day, the monks pray the Liturgy of the Hours, following a two-week cycle of the 150 Psalms. Every hour there is a hymn, a Scripture reading, a prayer of the day, and commemoration of Mary, the Mother of God. They pray for the Church, for all human beings, giving thanks, praise, and petition to God all through the day.
While prayer and contemplation are the structure of the days, the monks also labor in God's love and to support their holy order of monks. They make cheese, fruitcake, and fudge made with bourbon, the food items being sold to the public to be able to feed and clothe themselves, provide for abbey guests and visitors, and train new members of their order in the monastic life.
A new movie about the monks residing at the Abbey of Gethsemani has been completed and released at the beginning of March. Called One Day, it takes the viewer through a typical day with the monks. A unique feature of this film is the fact that the monks themselves performed all of the work that went into making it. Even the music was composed, arranged, and sung by the monks.
