Ecological Gardening

Over the US border and into Canada, Quebec to be exact, Meghan Kelly teaches a high school course to adults at CENTRE LOUIS-JOLLIET. Specifically, she teaches a course in ecological gardening, some 45 hours of course work. At the end of the course, her students have the skills to begin their own gardens, but also with the knowledge of how their acts impact the environment.

Under the sponsorship of a local environmental group, Craque-Bitume, Meghan developed the entire course, during which the students engage in a local greening project at a community garden. The group is known as a collective, which means that there is no hierarchy. The thought is that the format promotes maximum participation by its members. The group started with four members back in 2001 and has grown from there; its focus has been responsible citizenship and ecology.

Some of the activities, in which CRAQUE-BITUME engages, include community composting; training in ecological gardening; unusual forms of gardening suitable for urban environments, such as vertical gardens; container gardens for a local school; and community gardens. The course that Meghan Kelly developed has come through a partnership between this group and her school.

Involvement in Craque-Bitume can come in different ways. Of course, the group accepts donations. There are volunteer opportunities and the group even invites potential volunteers to create their own experience.  There are internships offered in community garden research and an applicant can also be accepted for employment; they are actively searching for employees with an interest in creating an urban gardening project. Most importantly, this organization encourages and thrives on the participation of its members and anyone with an idea appropriate to its mission. Ecology with participation, a winning concept.
