First Farm Animal Sanctuary In Mexico

The pigs received a wonderful donation of fresh veggies from Minerva.
The State of Nuevo Leon in Mexico depends on factory-farming as the basis of the local economy. But with the industrialization of providing farm animals for consumer consumption can also come a host of abuses, including too many animals stuffed into too small a space, filling animals with hormones to fatten them up quickly, slaughtering animals in ways that provide a slow and painful death to those that are caught in the factory-farm web.

A group of young adults, Adhara Talamantes, Gustavo Olvera, Blanka Alfaro, Adriana Alva, and Eli Hernandez, got together and formed the first farm animal sanctuary in Mexico, SANTUARIO LIBRES AL FIN! (Free At Last! Sanctuary). Essentially they rescue farm animals from a life of cruelty. When factory farms don't even meet State standards, local authorities can confiscate them. The animals suffer health issues from their ordeal and this sanctuary raises the funds to give them the care they need, then provide them a peaceful life, free of abuse.

The group accepts donations and sponsorships. Sponsors provide monthly donations for the care of the particular animal they sponsor. In return, sponsors receive a profile of the animal sponsored, and email updates about how the animal is doing. A donor can also make a general donation to the sanctuary for its upkeep expenses. The sanctuary is engaged in a current campaign to rescue three farm animals confiscated in Michoacan. Since they need to develop the physical structures on the sanctuary's land, and other expenses, they are raising the funds through INDIEGOGO.

The sanctuary is asking for a sponsor for Molly, who has the opportunity to grow up free at the sanctuary.
Future plans include being able to educate the public about how farm animals are raised and slaughtered. They plan to develop workshop programs, weekend tours, and public awareness campaigns that support animal rights. Sometimes they plan to partner with other organizations to work on protective legislation in such areas as bullfighting and cockfighting, to which they are opposed. It's a work in progress, constantly changing to meet immediate needs.

Molly (the baby) and Yoko enjoy resting in a straw bed.
