The group started out with one campaign, stopping the killing of bullfrogs, which the town of Smithville, TN, was sponsoring to help raise funds to send local sons and daughters to college. Now, violence to raise funds is rather peculiar, but to watch and participate in the blood and gore and carnage and call that charity is something else again. Jordan called it what it was - animal cruelty - and launched a campaign to stop the blood shed before it became part of the town's tradition - and fostered violent impulses. The stopping bullfrog abuse campaign was informational, especially connecting animal torture with other forms of violence, and also included a petition to government officials to stop this violence.
So, from there, the organization grew to what it is today. There are fifty employees now and the group has three departments. The Cruelty Investigation Department investigates rigorously reported cases of animal cruelty. Although the first place to report is local law enforcement, this department springs into action when law enforcement fails to respond. The Animal Emergency Response Department is a sort of backup with various other animal rescue groups and also responds directly to reported animal emergency situations in the areas around Wisconsin. The Division of Legal Affairs takes the battle to protect animals into the judicial system, all in the effort to address the issue of animal abuse.
