Feeding Pasco County

Deborah Gigliotti
In Pasco County, FL, people have to drive great distances in order to be able to purchase fresh food. It is even harder for low income people who live in the area and can't afford transportation. They rely on the generosity of food programs, like those run by METROPOLITAN MINISTRIES at their MetroMarket. At least there is food available for those in need twice each week, and it has made a difference.

You see, Pasco County, FL, is one of those areas recognized as a USDA food desert, because 90% of its food must come from a long distance outside the county. That means there is no local fresh food resource. What if there could be a resource introduced that would allow access to fresh food? There is nothing like a bit of ingenuity and inventiveness to unite people and resources. And in this country of do-it-yourselfers, why not some way to make it possible for people to make their own resources?

So, into this situation stepped grandmother Deborah Gigliotti. This woman had always had a knack with gardens since she was a young girl. She had completed a Master Gardeners program under the auspices of the State of Florida, and she was quite inventive. During her time in the program, she had put together a GREENHOUSE SOLUTION GROWING KIT, essentially a hydroponic greenhouse kit with all of the equipment needed to grow plants with hydroponics. But not only was it a hydroponics greenhouse, it used the latest in ecologically sound gardening - and it was made from recycled/repurposed materials.

In order to make it user-friendly for its intended consumers, Ms. Gigliotti took her time to create just the right instructional brochures to illustrate the steps needed to make the system work. When the kit is assembled fully, it takes up such a small amount of space that the whole thing can fit into a backyard, or outside a mobile home. When it has come to financing, Ms. Gigliotti has posted a video on Fundly to show how the kit works.

But that's not all. There is also PROVIDENTIAL PROVISION INC., the company of which she is President and CEO. It's a social enterprise company that employs veterans making green solutions products. It is the maker of the greenhouse kits. So, in many ways Deborah Gigliotti is making a difference for the people of Pasco County, FL.
