Lillian with some of her finished dresses. |
For two years, she has kept up her task and by this summer had reached a total of around 850. But she isn't done yet. By May of this year, Lillian hopes to reach the 1000 dresses mark. That will be extra special because she also turns 100 on May 6. She assures everyone that she doesn't have any plans to retire her sewing machine, even after her grand birthday.
Lillian does what she does for LITTLE DRESSES FOR AFRICA, a nonprofit group which provides dresses to young African girls who are living in poverty. So far, this organization has distributed more than two and a half million dresses to young girls in need.
According to her daughter Linda, "[Lillian] personalizes them all. It's not like good enough that she makes the dresses, she has to put something on the front to make it look special, to give it her touch." Linda is one of the daughters who takes the finished dresses to a senior living apartment complex in Davenport, where the residents are also making dresses for Little Dresses.
Little Dresses For Africa has the dress patterns on their website for anyone who is interested in making the dresses. The pattern is kept simple, so even those with beginning sewing skills can make them and participate.
