The Power Of Yoga

Orameh Bagheri
As a yoga teacher with 12 years of experience, Orameh Bagheri is well aware of the spirituality connection and also the healing properties of yoga. So, it probably is no surprise that Officer Brodie Seagrave of the LAPD YOUTH CADET PROGRAM asked her to teach some yoga classes. He had in mind offering the yoga classes to about 80 at risk youth between the ages of 13 and 19, who live in south Los Angeles.

Orameh shares some of the reasons why yoga is so valuable, "As a person with previous challenges of depression, addiction, and abuse - the practice of yoga has transformed the experience of living into one which is fully authentic, whole, and grounded, without dimming the streaks of fire which motivate!...I believe strongly in the healing and empowering capabilities of a rich yoga practice based on personal experience, and teaching from this place fills me with endless energy to commit to the love of yoga....[I]t is my intention to facilitate a safe and sacred space to guide with love and honesty for each person to explore the many layers through practice and participation."

Brodie was coming from a background as having extensive experience with psychiatric crisis intervention, has worked with a variety of professionals, and is known for his ability to work through complicated and high-risk situations. He has a masters degree in Conflict Negotiation and Crisis Management and is a certified addiction counselor.

So, the program built by both Orameh and Brodie is providing a safe place for LA youth. But it also offers a holistic framework, involving mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual aspects of self. An offshoot of the LAPD Youth Cadet Program has been the Jeopardy Program, which provides preventive services for youth at risk of joining gangs and committing crimes. The youth yoga program is one more way to reach these vulnerable young people.
