Large blanket fort at homeless shelter. |
August's family was able to collect 64 blankets, which became a large fort at the party, held at GLENWOOD COFFEE AND BOOKS. Then August's mom laundered all of the blankets and they were able to be used at their local homeless shelter. Well, all of the party participants had so much fun that the idea got bigger.
August's mom, Gwen Spitz, happens to be Director of Community Engagement at that same homeless shelter, INTERACTIVE RESOURCE CENTER, thought that they might be able to collect even more blankets this time around, after a number of families had asked her how their families could help out and have fun at the same time. So, The World's Largest (In Greensboro) Blanket Fort" became an event, this time at the shelter.
August Spitz, of course, was part of the action. Altogether, 127 families participated, with 259 blankets being contributed. The blankets were hung over ropes, and across tables and chairs, by both children and adults. The kids got badges that identified them as architects of the blanket fort. It was colorful, it was kid friendly, there were snacks, there was a party atmosphere, and there was the satisfaction of doing something needed.
After all was said and done, Gwen Spitz said, "Tomorrow morning - in the same room the fort was built in - roughly 220 men and women, and even some children, will come to use IRC services. It will be with great pride that we can tell them that the community came together in this phenomenal way to help."
