That day has now stretched onward and Chef Serato continues to serve pasta dinners to some of the most appreciative children around. By 2009, he was serving up to 400 kids per day, and just this January, the numbers had jumped to more than a thousand.
From the start, Bruno Serato has contributed his own funds to this effort, so much so that at one time he almost lost his restaurant. However, Anaheim's Boys & Girls Club helped Bruno to set up CATERINA'S CLUB, a nonprofit that helps to fund meals to poor, hungry, and homeless children and delivered by several local nonprofit groups. According to Michael Baker, executive director of the Anaheim Boys & Girls Club, "Here we have some of the poorest children in all of Orange County eating from one of the greatest restaurants in the world every single night. How awesome is that?"
But wait...that's not all. Bruno Serato and Caterina's Club have now provided security deposits for more permanent living settings to around 59 families, enabling them to move out of motel rooms and shelters. Now, Chef Serato has also been involved in conversations with youth programs in Chicago and New York, with the intention of expanding these services to those areas and farther. Just think, this entire effort began with a mother's request to her son and that son's heart of gold, which has kept the effort going and expanding.
