Donated Lunch Hour

Anton Cobb at his Wednesday table.
Every Wednesday 32-year-old Anton Cobb sets up a table in Director Park. His is the only one with a red and white checked tablecloth and a vase containing a flower. He sits and watches the passing crowd. One sign explains his purpose and that says: "I am skipping lunch. So that 30 children won't. Will you join me? Donate your lunch money to the OREGON FOOD BANK." He has a treasure chest at his feet, decorated with rockets and stars, in which he deposits any money he collects. If anyone was keeping track of how much time he spends, it is exactly one hour, the time of his lunch break.

It was one day this summer that Mr. Cobb saw an article about a family who utilized the services of the local food bank. As he thought about it, he contacted the Oregon Food Bank with this idea that he wasn't even sure would work. Laura Golino de Lovato, the food bank director, thought it was creative and different - and it might actually work.

So, in July, Mr. Cobb started his one man campaign, which is now called hOURLUNCH and it even has its own facebook page. When his fundraising effort was featured on a local newscast, one man drove all the way to Director's Park from Tigard, an hour's ride away, to make a contribution. So far, he's raised about $400, enough for about 1200 meals.

If you happen to be out and about in Portland and it's lunchtime on a Wednesday, meander down to Director Park. You'll find Anton Cobb and his special table. Stop by for some conversation and a small donation; you won't regret it.
Some locals stop by Anton's table.
