Pentatonix Celebrates Christmas

Pentatonix appearing at Luther College
There is this wonderful a capella singing group, PENTATONIX, with five vocalists and a unique, modern style. The group formed in 2011, just before the third season of Sing-Off (they had just met and gotten together the day before the auditions), and made the cut. They then went on to win the competition, which netted them prizes of $200,000 and a singing contract.

But, wait a minute, let's backtrack just a bit, to Martin High School in Arlington, TX. Three friends - Kirstin "Kirstie" Maldonado, Mitch Grassi, and Scott Hoying - got together and sang an arrangement of "Telephone" for a local radio station's contest, with a prize to meet the cast of "Glee". Although they didn't win, they became noticed around their high school and continued to sing together.

After graduation, Scott Hoying joined another a capella group while the other two friends started college. Scott was the one who heard about the Sing-Off audition, so he contacted his two friends. But they didn't have enough group members for the show, so Avriel "Avi" Kaplan and Kevin Olusola were added to the group. And the rest is recent history, so to speak.

The group has also been involved in some philanthropic efforts. While they were on Sing-Off, they did a 60-second spot for the Trevor Project and their campaign to combat bullying, especially towards LGBTQ youth. They have also performed for the "United We Sing" Kenya Project and at a fundraiser for Massachusetts General Cancer Center.

Watch and listen to this latest performance by Pentatonix of "Mary Did You Know?"
